Elevated AGC Onyeka Hands Over TinCan Customs Leadership to Compt. Anani Amidst Cheers, Celebrates Record-Breaking Revenue, Anti-Smuggling Gains

Recently Elevated ACG Frank Onyeka handing over the Baton of Leadership of TinCan Customs to Compt. Joe Anani

Former Customs Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service Tincan Island Port Command, Frank Okechukwu Onyeka, has reflected on his stewardship with pride after leading the Command to over ₦1.6 trillion revenue collection and major anti-smuggling breakthroughs before his elevation to the rank of Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs.

Speaking during his official handover ceremony at the Command headquarters in Lagos, Onyeka described his tenure as both emotional and fulfilling, expressing gratitude to officers, stakeholders and the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service for their support throughout his administration.

According to him, the Tincan Island Port Command exceeded its 2025 revenue target by generating ₦1.609 trillion against the projected ₦1.524 trillion for the fiscal year.

He also disclosed that the Command generated more than ₦401 billion within the first quarter of 2026, maintaining its position as one of the Service’s highest revenue-generating Commands.

The newly promoted ACG attributed the achievements to discipline, professionalism, intelligence-led enforcement, stronger compliance mechanisms and strategic engagement with stakeholders across the maritime sector.

On anti-smuggling operations, Onyeka revealed that the Command recorded several high-profile seizures, including illicit drugs and prohibited items valued at over ₦35 billion.

He noted that the interceptions demonstrated the commitment of the Service to protecting national security and preventing criminal networks from exploiting the port system.

“Our efforts reinforced the role of Customs as a frontline national security agency committed to safeguarding society from illicit trade and transnational crimes,” he said.

The outgoing Controller further highlighted the Command’s robust relationship with freight forwarders, terminal operators, shipping firms, importers, exporters and other government agencies, noting that collaboration remained central to operational efficiency and trade facilitation.

He said the Command also invested significantly in human capital development through regular training, workshops and professional development programmes aimed at improving officers’ efficiency and morale.

Onyeka acknowledged the role of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), commending the group for supporting officers’ families and contributing to staff welfare and community development initiatives.

He expressed profound appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his confidence, mentorship and transformational leadership which, according to him, has repositioned the Nigeria Customs Service for greater professionalism and transparency.

The former CAC also thanked officers and men of the Tincan Command for their resilience, loyalty and dedication, saying their collective efforts made the Command one of the most successful formations within the Service.

Handing over to the new Area Controller, Comptroller Joe Anani, Onyeka appealed to officers, stakeholders and the trading public to support the new leadership in sustaining and surpassing the Command’s achievements.

He expressed confidence in Anani’s leadership capacity and pledged continued support in his new role as Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs. “As I move to higher responsibilities, Tincan Island Port Command will always remain close to my heart,” Onyeka stated.
